The Library Challenges Register has been developed to help the sector understand the nature and extent of challenges to our library and information sector in Aotearoa New Zealand.
A challenge is when someone attempts to censor, remove, or restrict access to a publication, item or event so that it can't be accessed or is hard to access.
These may be challenges to events, books, displays, programmes, room usage or resource access. The register asks you to record information about the challenge and where it occurred, the objection, and the library’s response.
We encourage every library to add its challenge to the register so that we have the data we need to respond to challenges.
This register extends the LIANZA Freedom-to-Read Toolkit and contributes to our commitment to upholding freedom of access to information. Collecting this information will inform advocacy on behalf of the sector, such as the trend reports for public awareness, and enable LIANZA to provide better support for libraries facing challenges.
