Heke Puna Maumahara

No formal qualifications from educational institutions are required for admission. However, a demonstrated interest in the particular programme is expected. A strong desire to become bilingual should also be demonstrated.

Undergraduate (NZQA Level 5)

The Heke Puna Maumahara (HPM) is the first year of the three year bachelor degree and consists of te reo Māori, iwi & hapū, rorohiko (which are compulsory components) and the specialist subject. The foundation of this tohu is mātauranga Māori which provides the students with another approach to Information Management in contemporary practice offering basic skills in libraries, museums, and archives as well as strengthening iwi & hapū.

Poutuārongo Puna Maumahara

The year one Heke Puna Maumahara programme of study.

Undergraduate (NZQA Level 7)

The aim of the Poutuārongo Puna Maumahara (PPM) is to produce graduates who are able to design, implement and manage systems to suit whakapapa based rōpū, other Māori groups as well as other organisations. It develops bi-lingual and bi-cultural managers of Māori information resources in Māori and non-Māori organisations. The degree requirements include the year one Heke Puna Maumahara programme of study.

People who hold a recognised New Zealand library qualification, such as the MLIS (LIBS), MIS (LIBS), BA with ILS or double major with ILS Humanities or ILS Communications, BApSc with ILS, or Poutuārongo Puna Maumahara  may be eligible for employment in professional roles overseas. In some cases this will be facilitated by reciprocal agreements between LIANZA and overseas associations, such as ALIA and CILIP. Where no reciprocal agreement exists, graduates may need to have their qualifications evaluated to demonstrate that they are equivalent to overseas qualifications. The American Library Association website indicates that the LIANZA process of recognising qualifications is considered to be similar to its accredition process, saying “ An individual who has received his/her degree from an institution that is included on the countries' lists of accredited institutions/programs is considered acceptable for employment in the United States.” (http://www.ala.org/educationcareers/employment/foreigncredentialing/forjobseekers)
