Professional Registration

Professional registration is an important milestone for any librarian and information professional.

It establishes your proven knowledge, understanding and competence. In particular, registration shows your peers and employers that you have demonstrated a commitment to professional standards, and to developing and enhancing competence.

Benefits of registration:

  • Recognition as a professional in your field;
  • Improved self motivation, career opportunities and salary prospects;
  • Greater influence within your organisation and industry;
  • Confirmation that you are a competent librarian or information professional;
  • Connecting you with innovative, influential and inspirational people;
  • International recognition of your qualifications.

Still not convinced? Here are some more reasons to apply.

Money, money, money: How much does it cost?
The initial application fee is $57.50, which should be included with your application.

Following the approval of your registration by the Board, you will then be invoiced $115 annually. Keep in mind that this payment will coincide with your LIANZA membership invoice.

For Your Information

Sometimes life is...annoying. Whether it’s an expected event, family stuff or health issues – there are situations where your professional registration revalidation is the last thing you want to be thinking about.

To ensure that maintaining your Professional Registration doesn't become another stressful responsibility for you, the LIANZA office is happy to help you manage your commitments.

Getting an Extension on your Revalidation Journal

If exceptional circumstances have conspired to prevent you from submitting your journal on time then the Professional Registration Board can grant you an extension of up to 12 months. No, really! This allows you to complete your journal without stress, but doesn’t exempt you from the annual Continuing Professional Development requirement. To obtain an extension email your request to the Chair of the Professional Registration board, care of the LIANZA office.

Taking a leave of absence from Professional Registration

Sometimes an extension isn’t enough – you may need a temporary hiatus from your library and information. When you need a complete break from Professional Registration, including the annual CPD requirement you can request a leave of absence. Simply email your request to the Chair of the Professional Registration board, care of the LIANZA office.

What does a “leave of absence entail”?

A professional registration holiday isn’t just an extension to your revalidation due date. It gives you a no penalty period where you are exempt from participation in the scheme, with no fees, and no CPD requirement, whilst maintaining your registered status.

My specific circumstance isn’t covered by the Code of Practice

Get in touch with us anyway – it's impossible for us to foresee every possible circumstance that might cause someone to need to take a leave of absence. It will be referred to the Registration Board for their decision.

I’m unemployed – can I still be registered?

You absolutely can – provided you can demonstrate that you are maintaining your skills across the Body of Knowledge. But if you're unemployed and unable to access relevant training you have the option of taking a year long leave of absence while you look for employment.
