Professional Development: Children's Literacy Workshops

LIANZA is delighted to be working with the School of Information Management at Victoria University of Wellington to offer two workshops for librarians, early childhood and primary teachers and anyone who loves children and books.

These workshops will be presented by Dr Betsy Diamant-Cohen, an award-winning children’s librarian from the USA who is travelling to New Zealand to inspire librarians, early childhood and primary teachers to create high-quality early literacy programmes.

PLAY YOUR WAY TO LITERACY

Rutherford House, MZ03
23 Lambton Quay, Wellington
Tuesday, October 30, 2018
9am - 4.30pm

This hands-on workshop looks seriously at play, "the work of childhood," by introducing research about play and highlighting the important roles of parents, caregivers, librarians, and early childhood and primary teachers.

You will increase your understanding of play in the context of Every Child Ready to Read and Mind in the Making and have the opportunity to examine play, toys, and technology.

You will participate in playful activities that ignite imagination and build skills and discuss with other participants ways to add play into circle times. This workshop will showcase new ways to use developmental tips and family programming to foster positive play between parents and children.

Hands-on activities and video will provide a playful, meaningful day with practical suggestions that can be put immediately into action to help children build literacy, STEM, social and emotional skills.

Just like a sturdy block tower, this workshop aims to give participants a wide basis upon which to successfully build.

TRANSFORMING PRESCHOOL STORYTIME
Wednesday, October 31, 2018
Christchurch Core Education,
192 Kilmore Street
9am - 4.30pm

In this workshop you will experience a brief explanation of child development theories, domains of school readiness, multiple intelligences and 21st century skills, followed by an overview of traditional library storytime.

The important role repetition plays in learning leads to a demonstration of a chosen book
being read aloud. You will learn about a range of creative ways this book can then be repeated in preschool storytime for six weeks in a row, designed to help children build and strengthen various early literacy skills.

Interact with colleagues to choose a book, and design a minimum of six ways to use the book in preschool storytime while specifying the early literacy skill(s) each activity targets. Groups present selected activities and join in a unique closing activity.

This workshop will enable you to transform children from passive listeners to active
participants by using a single book in consecutive storytimes, employing repetition with variety, engage children with different learning styles by incorporating recent theories on how children’s brains work, design book-related activities that reinforce 21st century skills and use transformed storytimes to educate and involve parents and caregivers.
