Local History Librarian

Selwyn Council’s Arts, Culture and Lifelong Learning Team is an innovative, dynamic, and talented team that provides a wide range of cultural, literacy, and learning experiences right across the Selwyn District.

We are seeking to recruit an experienced professional from the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museum) sector to help lead our important local history work. We will be working alongside our community, helping them document stories – of the Selwyn’s past, and also of the present. We are creating a ‘living heritage’ – digital content that will be of interest to people of all ages from throughout Selwyn.

In addition to a strong interest in local history, we require qualifications and a high level of experience related to archives, records management in the GLAM sector. To achieve great results in this role you will have strong computing and web-based skills including some understanding of HTML, operational knowledge of website construction and software applications.

You will be able to demonstrate that you understand the links between disparate information systems – to be able to enhance metadata linkages and search outcomes. You’ll have excellent work management skills and enjoy communicating with people.

This new role is a permanent position, working 40 hours per week in Rolleston and across the wider district. Some days you might be working in the new Te Ara Ātea, or at Council’s HQ, and on other days you might be at Arthurs Pass or meeting with locals at Southbridge, Lake Coleridge or Glenroy.

The role will also involve some weekend and/or evening work – depending on the meetings and programmes you will be attending throughout Selwyn.

The work will be varied…

  • Part of the time you’ll be working with our colleagues and with Selwyn residents and local history groups, assisting them to share their resources onto our digital platforms.
  • Often, you’ll be applying your professional knowledge, experience and skill to organise the digital information, apply metadata and create searchable pathways, while also editing content to ensuring consistency and accuracy.
  • You’ll be responsible for all associated administration and will be quite busy as the primary contact point for heritage related enquiries.
  • You’ll also be supporting the planning and delivery of local history and heritage programmes and activities delivered by Council
