Libraries Director

Hamilton is a fast-growing city with a prominent and popular public library network servicing an increasingly diverse and tech-savvy community.

Our current Libraries Director is moving to a new role in our organisation, meaning we’re looking for new leader for Hamilton City Libraries.

We’re looking for someone who can play a major role in the delivery of our Libraries Strategic Plan, which puts a strong emphasis on ensuring our libraries are at the cutting edge of libraries’ global transformation and growth. You need to be looking beyond a traditional view of library services to the great opportunities for our customers in new and innovative ways of delivering our service and partnering with the community and stakeholders.

This is an important leadership position; you’ll have a team of four reporting to you directly, and you’ll be responsible for more than 80 staff across six different sites. You will have excellent financial and revenue management skills and an understanding of how vital fiscal responsibilities are in the public-sector environment.

Best practice library management knowledge and willingness to implement change will be vital for success in this position – as will the ability to generate high performance and strong people engagement.

Although an extensive background in the libraries sector would be an advantage, it is not essential. We need someone with drive, vision, a strategic approach to their work and their business, and the ability to get the best out of people and a customer-facing seven-day-a-week operation. Asset management expertise and experience in the public sector are also beneficial.

This role reports to our Community Services Manager and is part of the Council’s Community Group, led by our Deputy Chief Executive. You will be based in our Central Library but will be expected to keep in close contact with your teams at the five suburban libraries.

Hamilton is a city undergoing a renaissance, with a lively arts and creative sector, beautiful parks and reserves, a popular and diverse hospitality scene. We host major events at various sites we own and our Council is rolling out extensive investment in our city as part of our 10-Year Plan.
