The Alexander Turnbull Library is seeking a Curator, Photographs, to manage the Library’s Photographs Collection, with special emphasis on acquisition, collection management, maintaining links with the Photographic community, and promoting the collection to potential user groups.

The Alexander Turnbull Library is part of the National Library of New Zealand, with core activities in collecting, preserving and making accessible information about New Zealand and the Pacific in a variety of formats including print, electronic, sound, images and manuscripts.

This position is a member of the Curatorial Services team and reports to the Curator Services Leader.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • working across teams to ensure that photographs are arranged and described in ways that make them available to researchers; and housed and preserved for use by researchers in the future
  • developing the Photographs Collection through purchase and donation, and engaging with donors and vendors.
  • undertaking research into the Photographs Collection and contributing to publications, presentations, and exhibitions.

The successful applicant will have experience working in a professional role in a research or scholarship-based institution, as well as knowledge of archival or library theory and practice as they relate to both digital and paper-based materials.in research libraries. They will be expected to have a sound knowledge of history and the practice of photography in New Zealand and the Pacific. A basic understanding of tikanga Māori and Te Reo Māori pronunciation is required. This role will have a multi-faceted and dynamic work programme, and the Curator, Photographs, will need to be both positive and adaptable. 

The successful applicant may be required to work the occasional Saturday as part of a desk roster.
