Student Awards

LIANZA works with Victoria University of Wellington and the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand to reward the best and brightest students in Library and Information Studies.

Our student prizes are awarded annually for excellence in library and information management studies.


Mary Fleming Prize

Commemorating the outstanding services of Mary Smith Fleming (1908-1964) to New Zealand librarianship, this prize is awarded annually by the Victoria University of Wellington Professorial Board to a student of the LIBR 526 class.

The prize consists of a $200 book voucher, a LIANZA bookplate, a commemorative certificate and a complimentary 12 month LIANZA membership.

David Wylie Prize

The David Wylie prizes are provided annually to Victoria University of Wellington and Open Polytechnic students in memory of the former Victoria University of Wellington Librarian, David Wylie (1925–1985).

The Victoria University of Wellington prize is awarded to the student who completes the best piece of writing concerning an aspect of library and information studies.

The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand prize is awarded to the student who submits the best piece of writing concerning an issue within the LIS sector for the Open Polytechnic papers:

  • 72 370 Library and Information Issues
  • 72 371 Policy and Planning for Information Services

Both prizes consist of a $200 book voucher, a LIANZA bookplate, a commemorative certificate and a complimentary 12 month LIANZA membership.

LIANZA Prize (Open Polytechnic Diploma course)

The LIANZA prize is awarded annually to the student that obtains the highest overall academic achievement in either Level 5 or Level 6 Diploma of Information and Library Studies.

It is judged by the principal lecturer of the course.

The prize consists of a $200 book voucher, a LIANZA bookplate, a commemorative certificate and a complimentary 12 month LIANZA membership.

Te Pumunawa Award

This award is given annually for a student's work displaying a significant understanding and appreciation of biculturalism in New Zealand. 

A panel including a Te Rōpū Whakahau representative determines the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand student who completed the best written work on a bicultural theme in any of the courses making up the Information and Library Studies major.

The prize consists of a $200 book voucher, a LIANZA bookplate, a commemorative certificate and a complimentary 12 month LIANZA membership.
