Give 32 librarians 30 minutes to discuss the challenges they will face in the next year and what happens? The room ignites and 141 challenges are identified without much thought at all.

Ask them to spend the next 30 minutes discussing ideas to overcome just 5 of these challenges and what happens? The room erupts and 165 ideas are proposed.

That's the power of unleashing the expertise of the audience.

The challenges and ideas from The Ideas Factory workshop held at the 2011 LIANZA Conference are now available on NZ Libraries in 2025: Ideas.

To honour the expertise of the workshop participants, and to give others an opportunity to contribute, I have not undertaken any interpretation of the data yet. These are direct transcriptions of the challenges and ideas identified in the workshop and as a result there are similarities everywhere!

Now comes the hard part - bridging the gap between the inspiration of this workshop and all that we heard at conference, and the reality of work.

The next step is to develop the most important challenges and ideas into actions. And it can only be done with your help.

So what can you do?

1.   Vote for the challenges you'd like to see addressed. You can only vote once and you must sign in to vote. It's time to stand up and be heard.

2.   Add your issues and ideas to the mix by submitting a new idea or adding a comment to one already there. Don't worry about duplication (we'll sort that out later), it's important to let others know what you think rather than struggle on your own.

3.   Sare the website link with as many colleagues as you can.

Together we can achieve more than we can on our own.
