LIANZA Conference logo 2009

Our theme he tangata, he tangata, he tangata is based on the well-known words from the refrain of the following whakatauki (proverb):

Hutia te rito o te harakeke
Kei whea, te kōmako e kō
Kī mai ki āhau
He aha te mea nui o tēnei ao
Māku e kī atu
He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.

Translation :

When the heart is torn from the flax bush,
where will the bell bird sing?
You ask me, what is the most important thing on earth?
My reply is it is people, it is people, it is people

We aim to recognise those who have gone before us, those who surround us at the moment and those who will lead us into the future. Therefore, underpinning our theme of he tangata, he tangata, he tangata is the understanding that we will:

  • Acknowledge the past
  • Embrace the present
  • Advance the future
