Abstract Thoughts

Tēna koutou!

I was stuck on a topic for this week's Librarylife editorial so I'm going with highlighting the work of the feature writers and musing about possible abstract topics.

Just after the last issue went out, I received an e-mail from Michelle Anderson of Tauranga Library offering me an occasional piece in Librarylife on Children's and Teens services.  By the way, I love unsolicited new content!  Michelle is the team leader for children's and teens services for Tauranga City Libraries, and this week she's written a practical piece for those of us who work in Public Libraries on some simple things we can do to improve our Children's and Teens areas.

Sally as ever, is pumping out her regular piece for us.  This week Sally has written about the importance of aiming for excellence, always, just one thing we should all be doing if we want to remain relevant to our community.

We have an update from Donna Watt, Communications Leader for SLANZA, our partners in crime for the school libraries in the country, with a special highlight of their upcoming conference in Auckland mid July.

Aaand I gave Sean a break this week so no storytelling sorry.

The big thing on my mind though is conferences, abstract writing and collaborating.  Admittedly this has been on my mind for a couple of years and thankfully I'm really good at persevering.  I already have something on the burner, but am thinking about submitting something for the LIANZA 2011 Conference in Wellington, and I'm out to collaborate!

If you were going to submit an abstract for this year's conference, what would you write about?  This year's theme is "Te Ihi, te wehi, te wana" - People, power, passion (never a literal translation in te reo).

The conference committee have a few suggestions of areas that could be explored, and include the following;

• Power and influence – how to get it and how to keep it
• Having a voice, being heard and listening out loud
• Does knowledge still equal power?
• Power or empower what is the role of the information professional?

What do you think?  Will you be putting your hat in the ring this year?

ma te wa / until next time!
