Kia ora koutou
On 6 and 7 May I spent a most enjoyable weekend at Waitomo attending the ninth Waikato/Bay of Plenty Weekend School. Forty attendees participated in an eclectic and enjoyable programme at the smart, new Waitomo Caves Conference and Events Centre.
Sessions ranged from NZ libraries in 2025: changing the model to survive, to the implementation of Koha at Hauraki District Libraries; from successful readers’ advisory for Maori information seekers to surveying customer reactions for proposed charges for borrowing. I gave an update on recent LIANZA projects and initiatives as well as talking about progress to date with earthquake recovery at Christchurch City Libraries. The programme finale was a very useful workshop on translating these professional development offerings into the registration revalidation framework.
Well done to Jenny, Stef and the team for their memorable hospitality and for putting on such a smoothly run and interesting event with an excellent social programme. The tour of the Waitomo Caves was a highlight for this mainlander and the cuisine at the Huhu Café was delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in this part of the Waikato, meeting colleagues from throughout the region and beyond.
Ka kite
